Transmission electron microscope image of Strongylocentrotus drobachiensus [sea urchin] gastrula. This tangential thin section at the apical end of an epithelial cell shows a septate junction. The straight, unbranched septate junction is present throughout embryogensis and may act as a permeability barrier, as well as having adhesive properties.
