Transmission electron microscope image of Strongylocentrotus drobachiensus [sea urchin] pluteus. This freeze fracture replica of a septate junction at the apical end of an epithelial cell, shows 8-11nm particles on the E face and cooresponding grooves on the P face. Apical end of the cell is at the bottom of the image. The straight, unbranched septate junction is present throughout embryogensis and may act as a permeability barrier, as well as having adhesive properties.
